Spanish for Medical Professionals in Oaxaca
The Spanish for Health Care Professionals is a 2-week intensive Spanish Language course offered in the Summer of 2023 by the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca. Classes will begin on Monday, May 20, and conclude on Friday, May 31, 2024.
This Spanish course for healthcare professionals seeks to facilitate effective communication between healthcare professionals and their Spanish-speaking patients and clients.
During this course, students will learn to speak, comprehend, read, and write in Spanish, focusing on specialized vocabulary and medical communication.
The topics in this course include the body, parts and functions, symptoms of ailments and diseases, types and characteristics of diseases, medical and surgical equipment, medical appointments, studies, examinations and diagnoses.
Key Aspects of the Medical Spanish for Health Care Professionals Course
To reinforce the cultural immersion, students will reflect on topics related to the Mexican Health System in contrast to the systems in other countries, the leading health problems in Mexican culture, traditional medicine, food and nutrition in Mexico.
During this course, students will participate in an interactive talk with healthcare professionals from Oaxaca to learn from first-hand experience the challenges they face in the healthcare system in Mexico. Among guest speakers are Doctors, nurses, midwives, and traditional medicine healers known as "curanderas."
The Medical Spanish Course allows the student to:
Interaction with Spanish Speaker Patients
Interact in simulated situations within a clinic and hospital, in medical consultations with specialists, physical therapy sessions, and group therapy.
Learn Medical Spanish Terminology
Recognize the lexicon of body parts, medical equipment, health services, organs, body systems, medical instruments, and orthopedics equipment.
Describe tests, medical examinations, surgical processes, and disease progression.
Interpret Medical Studies in Spanish
Review medical care protocols between medical personnel and users of medical services.
Access audiovisual material from health institutions in Mexico
Requirements to join this course.
Be a student or user of Spanish as a second language related to the study or practice of general, specialized, complementary, and alternative medicine, nursing, therapy, and social work.
Have at least an intermediate level (B1, B2) of Spanish as a second language according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
